You may or may not have noticed that the ServiceNow community are running a challenge to see who can come up with the most creative 404 page for their portal. I thought I would throw my hat into the ring with a tongue in cheek Chuck Norris 404 page.
Note – To set expectations early, due to time constraints I haven’t put much thought into this and the end product you see below was thrown together in under an hour.
My idea was to show the obligatory 404 message about the requested page not being found but then to add some humour by dynamically serving up some Chuck Norris facts using a web service call to a third party API. All complemented by a large picture of the man himself pointing the finger at you like you have done something wrong.
When the page loads the text slides in from the right and the user is presented with the 404 message and an initial fact about Chuck Norris. The user then has the option to click a button to make another web service call and get another fact or to click a button to go to the portal’s homepage.
Note – Open the video in full screen for best results (so you can actually read the text).
As mentioned above this was obviously more of a fun exercise than a serious project and due to the rushed nature of everything i’ll not share my code as it’s not the neatest. But to give you an insight into what was required to make this:
- 1 x large picture of Chuck Norris
- 1 x ServiceNow instance with the service portal plugin enabled
- 1 x Google Font (Indie Flower)
- 1 x Animate.css
- 1 x Web Service call to “The Internet Chuck Norris Database“
- 1 x Sense of humour
